Traffic mitigation
KBA actively seeks creative solutions to near-term problems while continually pressing for a long-term plan. Current successes include expanding Kuhio Highway at Coco Palms to 4 lanes, widening the Wailua River, cane bridge to 2 lanes, securing funding to explore the extension of Pouli Road from Kuhio Highway to the Temporary Bypass.
Highway Widening at Coco Palms and Cane Haul Bridge behind schedule.
Members of the KBA Traffic Committee expected both projects to be in the bidding process this fall. The Committee will have met with State and local officials prior to publication of this article, in an effort to understand the issues and get a revised timetable. News will be made available on KBA’s website.
Coastal Trail and Parks
KBA has endorsed construction of the 18 mile trail and participated in the planning process. Adopting Horner Park at the entrance to Kapaa, helps to secure new mullti use fields at Lydgate Park and Kapaa New Park.
Japanese Stone Lantern - Latest Update
STONE LANTERN INSPECTIONS BEGIN NOW!
Experts in structural engineering and concrete conservation will arrive early February to begin their study of the Japanese Stone Lantern in Kapaa Beach Park. The resulting reports will be used to aid in the development of a full-restoration plan. KBA has already applied for an additional grant to fund the entire restoration project. Results of this application are still unknown. The Kapaa Business Association wishes to thank the County of Kauai and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for providing KBA a grant under the CDBG program to fund this initial study. Additional recognition goes out to Jeff Derren, Larry Dill, Rayne Regush, Tim Bynum and the 2006 class of Leadership Kauai for championing this project
BIG BOX BILLS
In a formal vote January 9, the KBA Board of Directors resolved to take an official position regarding the two “big box” initiatives before the Commission. This position was given in verbal and written testimony to the commissioners. KBA supports the passage of both bills to limit the size of future retail or wholesale establishments to 75,000 square feet.
