Traffic Concerns

The Kapaa Business Association has been an active participant in efforts to improve traffic flow on Kauai's East side. Directors meet regularly with the State Department of Transportation (DOT) and county officials representing the interests of the businesses and residents of Kauai's east side. KBA has participated in the development and prioritization of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). KBA Directors are currently writing their 3rd position paper in response to the latest proposing interim solutions that incorporate the long-term Relief Route. The document will again be presented to DOT staff, the Governor, Mayor and County representatives in September. KBA will host a general membership meeting at the end of October at which the current status of Kauai transportation projects will be presented by Mr. Brennon Morioka, Deputy Director of Highways for the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation.
KBA TRAFFIC UPDATE: Wailua Bridge After 7 years of the KBA pressing the Dept. Of Transportation (D.O.T.), and our politicians to get this project started D.O.T. has begun the bridge project which was awarded to Unlimited Construction on January 13, 2009. This project includes the replacement of the existing single lane bridge across the Wailua river with a new two lane prefabricated bridge. In addition the new bridge will carry the multi-use path on the makai side of the bridge.
The project started just past the cane haul bridge on the Lihue side and ends on the Kapaa side at Kuamoo Road. The cost of the bridge originally projected at $19M is now $23M The Hawaii D.O.T. and the Contactor are currently working through the final stages of construction and completion is expected between early August November 2010.
